Part of the colonial strategy is the eradication, the uprooting of the indigenous peoples, the eradication
of their memory and their roots, their cultural and national identity. The preservation of oral history and
the audiovisual evidence of this history is a form of resistance.

A group of salpeter boilers lift the cow dung and urine-soaked earth of a stable in Toggenburg in the 18th
century in order to wash out the saltpetre. Film technicians light up these scenes and to continue working
as saltpetre boilers. Afterwards they wash together in the river to get rid of the dirt. Even though they
endeavour to wash away the traces of their work, some of it still sticks to them.

In a single humiliating day, Silvia is fired from her job despite being a few years away from retirement, 
the police fines her during a traffic check, and the director of the church choir takes away her solo part. 
During the Ave Maria rehearsal, Silvia decides to endure in an act of silent resistance.

Biography




Marano & Issa founded Sinn sieht sich Filmproduktion in 2022.

Jumana Issa & Flavio Luca Marano are a Zurich based Filmmaker Team. 

Jumana and Luca have met during their studies at ZHdK in the Film department in 2016. Jumana graduated with a 
BA focus on screenwriting, Luca graduated with a BA focus on cinematography, both in 2021. They gratuated with honors 
(ZHdK Förderpreis as best graduation film of their year). Their graduation film ES MUSS premiered at the 74th 
Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Best Swiss Newcomer Award. The Film was also shown worldwide at 
renoved Filmfestivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, Brussels, Brest, Dresden or at Show Me Shorts in New Zealand.
